This week’s piece is Edvard Grieg’s tribute to the Danish -Norwegian playwright Ludvig Holberg, composed in 1884 for the 200th anniversary of his birth. From Holberg’s Time was originally written as a piano suite, but later was adapted for string orchestra, the version I will be studying.

Initial Impressions

I frequently observe when I am on the precipice of experiencing something new. I am always aware of the moment before my discovery of a new location, film, television series, and so on. One of the finest examples came three years ago as I was high in the sky somewhere over this great country. I was headed for my two-week “Big 10” anniversary trip with my wife. At that time, I was consciously aware of the fact that all the images I had created for myself up until that moment were about to be overtaken by the real thing. No longer would I have an incorrect visual in mind about Seattle, Vancouver, San Francisco, Hollywood, or Disneyland. And, throughout those two whirlwinded weeks, I reminded myself of what I’d just done, knowing that, for example, the Space Needle would now always occupy a place in my mind, having really experienced it for myself, and with my girl!

Now, that is a bit extreme of an example. I’m not suggesting that listening to From Holberg’s Time, in any way, is the same as taking my biggest vacation ever. But, I did have a bit of that same feeling just moments ago when I came across the name of this suite for the very first time in my life, and now, just about 20 minutes later, I have made an initial pass through it, downloaded the score for use this week, and read the full background on the piece. I have now added a spot in my brain for this new-to-me piece. Pretty cool. And, fortunately, I very much liked the sound of it. Here’s to several more listenings this week!
