St. Louis (Rewind 4/11/1990)

Modern-day commentary

It would’ve been a tragedy if this essay had been lost, one of my favorites ever. It was written in 7th grade and outlines my wonderment at the thought of moving to St. Louis on the strength of the fact that I’d watched some of the World Series games three years prior, and had made an Ozzie Smith game jersey by adding a masking tape “1” to the back of a red t-shirt. I particularly enjoy the appositive in the second sentence (“…, the Cardinals,…) which was probably a required element, and which has led to a lifelong use of appositives and other methods of writing overtly long, but grammatically in-bounds sentences. The paper includes the best last sentence I’ve ever written, and believe me I’ve tried to top it (see any other post on this website for evidence).

I wish I could live in St. Louis, Missouri. It is a wonderful city, and it is where my favorite baseball team, the Cardinals, play. While living in St. Louis, I would be able to go to the beautiful Gateway Arch as often as I want. The view from up there must be spectacular. During the season, I would buy Cardinal season tickets and go to every game played in Busch Stadium. Although it ranks fourth in violent crime in the United States*, I feel there would be no better place to live than St. Louis, MO.
